Location: Position is based in Richmond, VA. Hybrid, remote work.

Communities In Schools (CIS) of Virginia supports a growing network of affiliate offices across the Commonwealth, helping students stay in school and achieve in life through the proven CIS model of Integrated Student Supports. The state office provides strategic leadership, technical assistance, and resource development to sustain and grow high-quality programs that meet evolving community needs.
The CIS of Virginia (CIS-VA) office is a small, but high energy organization supporting 6 independent affiliates and one emerging affiliate across Virginia in adherence to guidelines developed by the CIS national office. Our role is to drive statewide growth and help ensure local affiliates have the tools and capacity to provide and sustain strong student services in their local communities.
Position Summary
The Grants Manager is a seasoned professional who ensures Communities In Schools of Virginia (CIS-VA) has the resources to advance its mission. The Grants Manager will identify, pursue, and report on corporate and foundation grant funding, while partnering closely with program leaders and the Senior Vice President of Advancement to ensure all program members have the tools they need to support their work. The Grants Manager will also support the finance function in grant management. This position is ideal for a detail-oriented strategist who can balance grant deadlines and multiple incoming funding streams, ensuring the advancement and finance functions run smoothly in support of transformational growth.
Essential Functions
The Grants Manager is responsible for:
Grants Strategy and Management
Lead the full grants lifecycle, including research, proposal development, reporting, and stewardship.
Manage and grow a portfolio of foundation, corporate, and government funders, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities.
Collaborate with program and finance staff to develop budgets and gather data that demonstrate CIS-VA’s impact.
Maintain a robust grants calendar to ensure timely submission and reporting.
Contribute to statewide fundraising initiatives by identifying and coordinating grant opportunities that benefit CIS-VA and its affiliates.
Oversee grant, contract, and restricted-fund accounting, as applicable.
Manage all aspects of the various grants programs including but not limited to applications, grant guidelines, supporting committee decision-making, and payment of all grant awards.
Facilitate various grant committee meetings to ensure clear and consistent program management.
Financial Management
Collaborate with the Senior VP of Advancement and the Vice President of Operations to develop, contribute to, and maintain internal grant management policies and procedures, performance measures, and dashboards
Monitor the overall activity of existing funds, responding to inquiries from fund holders including timely action for contribution and distribution request
Generating timely monthly, quarterly, and annual grant statements and financial analysis
Contributing to organizational budgeting, reporting, and routine expenditure reports
Organizational Impact
Collaborate with the Vice President of Advancement and leadership team to integrate grants strategies into broader advancement goals.
Represent CIS-VA at meetings with funders, partners, and affiliates as the subject matter expert on grants and finances.
Work in partnership with donors and fund advisors to refine and improve all aspects of grant making programs to ensure programs reflect philanthropic goals of the donors.
Manage grant partner relationships and communications, organize engagement and follow-up opportunities, problem-solve challenges, track progress, and maintain accurate records.
Qualifications:
5-7+ years of professional experience in grants writing and management, preferably in the nonprofit or education sector.
Demonstrated success securing and managing six- and seven-figure grants.
Strong understanding of public and private grant management processes.
Outstanding writing and editing skills with the ability to tailor messages for funders, donors, and public audiences.
Experience with government grants and statewide policy engagement.
Ability to serve as a strong public representative of the CIS network.
Experience juggling multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Commitment to CIS’s mission of removing barriers to student success and ensuring access to opportunity for every learner.
Desired: Experience with the following systems: Hubspot, Monday, QuickBooks, and Mailchimp.
Details
This is a full-time, salaried position based in Richmond, VA. The position reports to Communities in Schools of Virginia’s Senior Vice President of Advancement and will work closely with the Vice President of Operations. CIS-VA provides a Hybrid work schedule with Mondays and Fridays at home and Tuesdays through Thursdays in office. Travel is as needed.
Compensation and benefits
