Position Title: Director, People & Culture
Reports to: Chief Operating Officer
Position Status: Exempt, Salaried; 40 hours/week.
Hiring Range: $90,000 - $115,000 with Benefits
Location: Position is based in Richmond, VA. This is a hybrid work schedule with Mondays and Fridays remote.

Founded over 35 years ago, BHC’s mission is to change lives and transform communities through high quality, affordable housing with the ultimate goal of helping people realize their fullest potential. The organization budget is approximately $27M of which 80% is self-funded with over 70 employees located at their new office at West Laburnum Ave, Richmond, VA. The staff profile of BHC is C-Suite, Directors, Managers, to Maintenance Employees.

Position Summary

This role is crafted for a values-motivated human resources professional with an interest in culture, training, and care for our diverse workforce and expertise in the legal and policy landscape necessary to implement HR best practices and principles. The Director, People and Culture (DPC) streamlines and oversees the managing of all aspects of the HR processes, strategic HR leadership, organizational development, talent management and acquisition, retention, employee relations and compliance. This position is also responsible for planning, leading, and training staff at all levels and works with Senior Management to steward BHC’s organizational culture. While the DPC directly interacts with staff, they are an office of one with partial administrative support from an employee. BHC has aspirational growth plans and goals and foresees an opportunity for an expanded HR team to support the DPC in their role. 

The DPC will also be directly involved in supporting and achieving Better Housing Coalition’s Strategic Plan. Better Housing Coalition is deeply committed to their mission, vision, and values and the Director, People and Culture is required to help contribute, develop, and uphold BHC’s core competencies.

Essential Functions

People Operations and Human Resources

  • Administers or oversees the administration of human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.

  • Conducts research and analysis of organizational trends including review of reports and metrics for talent management.

  • Partners with Brokers to ensure best coverage and price for employee benefits.  Coordinate and implement the annual open enrollment process.

  • Conduct salary surveys and ensure fair and legal compensation plans are implemented and maintained. 

  • General administration of employee files.

  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law; applies this knowledge to communicate

  • Manages all organizational recruitment

  • Partners with leadership in managing career pathways as well as career and professional development opportunities for employees throughout the organization.

 Culture and Engagement

  • Partners with leadership in shaping the organization’s culture and overall employee experience by highlighting diversity, equity, employee engagement and satisfaction.

  • Focuses on enhancing the employee experience throughout the organization with the implementation of various initiatives that enhance the organization’s culture, including employee onboarding, recognition programs, wellness initiatives, etc.

Collaboration with Senior Leadership

  • Partners with senior leadership to understand the goals and strategy related to staffing, recruitment, and retention.

  • Plans, leads, develops, coordinates, and implements policies, processes, training, initiatives, and surveys to support the organization's human resource compliance and strategy needs as well as aligning the organization’s environment to the company values and mission.

  • Works with the senior leadership team making recommendations and collaborating with other team members on special projects and strategic planning.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a performance management system including the performance appraisal process, goal/metric setting and process for manager/employee performance follow-up throughout the year.

Qualifications

Minimum Educational & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • SPHR and/or SHRM-SCP preferred

  • Previous experience in a Human Resources Department

Minimum Skill Requirements

  • In-depth knowledge of Virginia and federal employment laws

  • In-depth knowledge of benefit plans and compliance

  • Proven success recruiting for entry to executive level positions

  • Effective presentation skills

  • Proficiency in MS Office products

  • Strong customer focus and interpersonal skills

  • Effective and professional verbal and written communications

Details

This is a full-time, salaried position based in Richmond, VA. The position reports to BHC’s Chief Operating Officer and leads the Human Resources team, which includes supervision of an organizational Administrative Assistant.

Compensation and benefits

The salary for this position is $90,000 - $115,000. Benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance (with fully covered employee premiums); 21 days of vacation plus 5 sick days and holidays; and a retirement plan. Visit the website for a full list of our benefits here.
