Position Status: Exempt, Salaried; 40 hours/week
Salary: $105,000 - $120,000 with Benefits
Position is based in Lynchburg, VA. This position is required to be onsite.

Position Summary
The Executive Director (ED) is the chief executive officer of Rush Homes, responsible for overall leadership, strategic direction, and operational management of the organization. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED ensures that Rush Homes’ programs, services, and properties advance its mission while maintaining long-term organizational sustainability.
In addition to overseeing internal operations, the ED serves as the primary ambassador of Rush Homes, building strong relationships with donors, community partners, public officials, and the media. The ED is expected to raise the visibility of Rush Homes, clearly communicate its mission, and cultivate community and financial support to sustain and grow its impact.
The ED directly supervises the Director of Finance, Director of Development, Office Manager, and Resident Services Coordinator, ensuring that each functional area of the organization is effectively managed and aligned with strategic priorities. The ED also works closely with the Director of Finance and the Real Estate Development Coordinator to guide housing development initiatives.
Essential Functions
Leadership & Strategic Direction
Set organizational vision, strategic direction, and priorities in alignment with the mission and Board guidance.
Lead and supervise the senior leadership team, ensuring coordination and accountability across departments.
Foster a collaborative, mission-driven culture that supports organizational effectiveness and impact.
Finance & Compliance
Oversee the financial integrity, sustainability, and accountability of the organization in partnership with the Director of Finance.
Ensure accurate financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting to support decision-making and long-term planning.
Maintain compliance with all legal, regulatory, and contractual requirements.
Present financial updates and organizational performance information to the Board.
Fundraising & External Relations
Serve as the primary spokesperson and representative of Rush Homes.
Cultivate and maintain relationships with major donors, funders, community partners, and public officials.
Lead overall resource development strategy and support the Director of Development in execution.
Increase visibility through public engagement, communications, and advocacy efforts.
Programs & Services
Ensure effective delivery of programs that advance the mission, including housing and resident services.
Support the Resident Services Coordinator in promoting housing stability and resident success.
Align program outcomes with organizational goals and community needs.
Property Management
Provide oversight of the housing portfolio to ensure alignment with mission, quality standards, and compliance requirements.
Partner with the Director of Property Management to monitor performance, occupancy, and operational effectiveness.
Ensure properties support resident stability and long-term sustainability without engaging in day-to-day management.
Real Estate Development
Provide strategic oversight of housing development initiatives.
Support and guide the Real Estate Development Coordinator in advancing projects.
Ensure development efforts align with organizational priorities, financial feasibility, and community need.
Board Relations
Serve as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors.
Provide timely, accurate reports and strategic recommendations to support governance and decision-making.
Partner with the Board on strategic planning, policy development, and organizational oversight.
Support Board development, including recruitment and engagement.
Staff Supervision & Organizational Management
Directly supervise senior staff, including the Director of Finance, Director of Property Management, Director of Development, Office Manager, and Resident Services Coordinator.
Promote strong communication, collaboration, and accountability across departments.
Lead performance management, professional development, and retention efforts.
Ensure organizational structure and staffing align with strategic goals.
Oversee human resources functions, including organizational policies, employee relations, and compliance with applicable employment laws and regulations.
Ensure effective HR systems and practices are in place, including hiring processes, benefits administration, and staff support, in coordination with appropriate staff or external providers.
Desired Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in nonprofit management, public administration, social work, business, or related field preferred.
5–10 years of progressive leadership experience, including supervision of senior staff.
Experience in affordable housing, property management, social services, or nonprofit management strongly preferred.
Demonstrated ability to lead complex organizations and align multiple functional areas.
Strong external presence with the ability to effectively represent and advance the organization’s mission.
Proven experience in fundraising, donor engagement, and partnership development.
Knowledge of nonprofit governance, financial management, and regulatory compliance.
Details:
This is a full-time, salaried position based in Lynchburg, VA. The position reports to Rush Home’s Board of Directors. Travel is as needed.
Compensation and benefits:
The salary for this position is $105,000 - $120,000. Benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance (with fully covered employee premiums); life insurance; simple IRA+ retirement benefit; and paid leave.
