Position Summary

The Director of People (DoP) streamlines and oversees the administration of people operations functions including—compensation, benefits, and leave; grievances, disputes, and investigations; talent acquisition, development, and progressive discipline; engagement, recognition, and morale; and compliance with employment laws and regulations.

The primary responsibility of this position is to lead the people strategy within MACAA by ensuring the People Operations team thoughtfully drives growth and champions the development and success of each staff member (70+ FT and 10+ PT employees; $5.7M annual operating budget). The DoP directly supervises one staff member, participates as an engaged member of senior leadership, and develops strong relationships with all levels of management and staff. As a result, they keep a pulse on the mood of the organization and act as a connection point between leadership and staff. The DoP will use a DEI lens in all areas of people operations to foster a culture of belonging.

Essential Functions

Culture & Engagement

  • Creates opportunities for staff connection. Enhances relationship building within teams and across the organization.

  • Builds and champions initiatives relating to employee engagement and experience. Tracks and analyzes key metrics to monitor staff satisfaction and continuously improve people operations practices and the experience of working at MACAA. 

  • Implements a continuous improvement agenda with focus on engagement and wellness programming, maximizing productivity, upskilling managers, and building leadership capability. 

Talent Planning/Acquisition & Performance Management

  • Collaborates with senior leadership to develop organizational goals and strategies relating to workforce planning, recruiting, and retention.

  • Creates career pathways that engage staff and improve retention rates.

  • Leads a performance strategy that supports continuous feedback and development for all employees. The strategy should include performance review cycles, 1-on-1s, goal setting, and 180/360s in addition to other approaches as determined by organizational objectives.

  • Promotes enhanced leadership competency by demonstrating organizational values and championing a leadership behavior framework.

Total Rewards

  • Collaborates with senior leaders to build a competitive compensation strategy for the organization.

  • Develops equitable and transparent pay bands and pay scales for employment positions.

  • Manages all employee benefits, ensuring administration is compliant and consistent. Evaluates benefit plans and programs annually.

Employee Relations & Compliance

  • Provides guidance and coaching to managers on complex employee relations issues with an approach that proactively responds to concerns.

  • Makes sure that policies, procedures, and practices are compliant with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations. Monitors changes in legislation and proactively updates policies and practices.

  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in people operations. Applies this knowledge to recommend changes in policy, practice, and resources.

Qualifications

While this position leads several key areas of our work, it is not our expectation that candidates have a mastery across all areas; instead, we encourage candidates to apply who have self-awareness and humility around areas they will need to grow in and the motivation and aptitude to lead the learning required to hit the ground running.

  • 2+ years of experience in Human Resources, people operations, and/or employee relations

  • Demonstrated experience in organizational change and/or development (i.e., culture building, people strategy, etc.)

  • Strategic thinker who thrives in high volume workplaces

  • Excellent interpersonal communication and problem-solving abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a team of professionals

  • Demonstrated proficiency working with Microsoft Office

Nice-to-haves

  • Non-profit experience

  • Experience using a digital HRIS platform like ADP, Workday, BambooHR, or a related system

  • Active affiliation with local SHRM chapter or similar network

  • PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, or other Human Resource certification
